I recently ran into this article on an Ultra oil ETF strategy:

By shorting each side of the Long/Short ETFs I will eventually come up on the positive end. Not sure how effective this will be in real life but long term on CAPs combo-ing these ETF is a sure winner.

New 52 week low. Diversified, leveraged play on the peaking of the Kondratieff Wave (commodity cycle) which, after the current rise, should decline for many years to come.

Testing a theory here with this account, shorting all short ProShares for starters.

This is one of many of UltraLong's Picks. With the VIX going down when the market goes down, as it has in the past few days, it's time to go long. The bottom is in. The worst sector, banks is being marked-to-profit. It's time to go long. Seeing as how it's easier to just copy UltraLong's picks than create a new list of my own by sorting through an immense quantity of etf providers, I'm joining him since I can't beat him.

Short term: China is on a buying spree. Long term: I find it extremely unlikely that commodity prices, think food and raw materials, will decrease in a significant, sustained way. Two large trends drive this. Population growth makes for increased demand, and the growth of middle classes in developing nations also increases demand.
Risks: Technological advances will make it more efficient to produce commodities, and will add efficiencies in their use as well. I expect such progress will at best keep pace with demand, but rapid advances could conceivably get ahead of it. But, if we are lucky enough to enjoy such rapid advances, many investments should far outperform a short on commodities. For another risk, a large war would eliminate both demand drivers, but this might be partially offset by protectionist trade measures.
Further comfort: This is a leveraged short ETF. Volatility in the underlying index creates a serious drag on performance over time. Just look at how SKF has fared during the financial crisis.
