CAPS Rating:
*

The company provides research, sales and trading, and investment banking services to companies and institutional investor clients primarily in the healthcare, technology, media and telecommunications, alternative energy, and consumer sectors.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

This might be seemingly the most no-brainer call I have EVER made. Cowen Group currently has $13.39 in cash per share with literally 11 cents per share in debt. Take that out and the stock has $13.28 in cash per share and is trading at $9.02! They announced a 2 million share buy back in November whi...More

Solid balance sheet and negative enterprise value. It will be a struggle for awhile, but the company can weather it and is priced for failure. It may take a bit of time, but this is a buy here.

Take that out and the stock has $13.28 in cash per share and is trading at $9.02! They announced a 2 million share buy back in November which should buoy the share price. COWN did announce an increased compensation ratio which will result in a 5-6M dollar quarterly loss, but EPS estimates are still for .25-.65 cents per share in EPS next year. That values the company at basically 15-20 times next years earnings and just 75% of its instrinsic cash value. This is a frickin no brainer!!!! Buy buy buy!

Cowen Group is an investment bank that had recently gone in for an initial public offering. Main focus is on healthcare, technology, media and telecommunications and consumer sectors, which has a huge potential accounting for about a half of the S&P 500, with strong fundamentals.

Performance of the company has been good in the recent quarter, evolving well as an independent company moving into new ventures that was not possible when it was a subsidiary of a larger organization. It owes its success to the disciplined asset allocation strategy on the trading floor that it yielding results as evidenced by the secondary equity revenue increase 8% year on year.

The company is very bullish about its newly formed division alternative energy, betting on growth in solar, bio-fuels despite downward pressure on oil prices. Moreover with energy security being an important issue in the political circle it has made significant strides helping in the initial public offering of First Solar, Suntech Power Holdings and SunPower corp. Going strong, it believes in hiring the best minds in the industry with rich experience to steer the growth of the company. Endorsing the same it has roped in people to run the newly formed Cowen Healthcare Royalty Partners, who have extensive experience financing the commercialization of drugs through royalty structures.

Investment banking revenues for the latest quarter had almost tripled and was busy with raising public capital, executing 26 equity and converted transactions. However the future depends on how well it grows its private placement franchise and still remains a bright spot.

It anticipates reducing its non-compensation expenses to the tune of $6 million in 2007. The outlook for investment banking and brokerage industry looks positive with mergers and acquisitions rising from cyclically depressing levels. With sufficient volume in the pipeline of investment banking operations along with confidence and prospects in its newly formed ventures, the stock is all set to beat the market.

Recently downgraded by credit suisse this will have an impact on this new issue stock as people take profits in the next several months. After that shakeout, the real performance will begin to factor in.
