Great balance sheet and growing healthcare diagnostics sector makes it an excellent long term bet considering the demographics.

A 25% drop on a 4-star stock? I'll bite. Looking for a return to profits in late '09 or 2010. Even a reset back to $7.50 bodes well for short-term gain. Long on a small amount of shares.

I like the esoteric testing labs. I think that we will see tests being priced at ~$5K in the next few years, maybe even ~$10K and the healthcare system becomes increasingly focused on value per dollar

Great growth company hammered down to a very attractive entry point. No debt, good 5 year historical growth rate and they get the most out of each employee. I think the downside has been factored in and the upside is significant enough to warrant watching this one.

Testing company failing the test today with major sell-off related to poor earnings/limited visibility. Still in a good space long term - likely to take a while, but looks okay to nibble at this grower in the $7 range; technicals suggest 10-15% rebound not out of question within next few quarters

Celera is a stock for the long term. It is is due to announce its earnings on the 24th October and has already received a milestone payment from Merck in September + it announced that "early next year it aims to begin marketing a diagnostic test for a previously unknown major heart risk that could shake up the coronary field and quickly become one of its biggest products". Sounds good to me so hence the pick.

This stock, at one time a Rule Breaker pick, was in the business of cracking the Human Genetic Code, and was ahead of the US Government in the race. Alas, the parent company gutted everything that was useful, read profitable, from this company, and set it adrift......... If there ever were a "Darwin Award" for stocks, this one would be in the running.......

i think i might be taking this one on a bit too soon, it might fall off initially, but ultimately this one is going places. research into molecular illnesses is going deeper and deeper and these guy's are providing the tools, plus they're developing for themselves.

Recent developments in the field of pharma and human genome sequencing have increased the role of technology in drug discovery. These developments have increased the relevance of sectors like targeted medicines, molecular diagnostic tools and genomic discovery platforms in drug discovery. Celera group, Applera corporation is a company formed to take advantage of this emerging scenario. The company is a 50: 50 joint venture between Applera corporation and Celera genomics. Together, they provide molecular diagnostic tools and related software tools to biotech companies in the area of targeted therapeutics.

Net revenue of the company has increased by 12% for the six month period ended December 2006 as the targeted therapeutics sector is slowly replacing conventional medicines for complex diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. Targeted therapeutics or smart medicines are unique in the sense, that it attacks only the disease-affected cells and not the healthy ones. This property makes them effective in treatment of diseases like cancer and nervous system disorders.

The targeted therapeutics segment is expected to corner a major market share of existing pharma market as the drug discovery platform begins to incorporate more of molecular diagnostic tools. Commercial applications of molecular diagnostic tools will provide timely detection of cancer and other deadly diseases. This helps to improve the patient outcome by predicting the disease risk, selecting the most effective therapy and monitoring treatment.

Targeted therapeutics segment is going to get a big boost in 2007, as some cancer treating vaccines will be hitting the market. On the back of the same, the company is focusing on cancer vaccine market, as it will easily correlate with its diagnostic tools which are currently deployed in the area of cancer research. The company’s competency in the areas of molecular diagnostic tools and related software ensures that they stay in reckoning in future research applications too. As the targeted therapeutics segment rises to capture the traditional drug market, company is well positioned to leverage the same.
