Deere & Company (DE)

CAPS Rating:
*****

The Company operates in 4 segments: agricultural equipment segment, commercial and consumer equipment segment, construction and forestry segment, and credit segment.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Machine of choice for the farmer. Farmers never had crop prices like they do now and for the forseable future. Cheaper dollar means more export potential for the growing demand for aggriculture products.

My going macro thesis is that "soft landing" includes both the word "soft" and the word "landing". Since machinery has been run up nicely as the first word in the phrase has started sinking into the market's consciousness, I decided to fade a couple names. If there is a risk at current prices, it ...More

Solid stock performance so far. As well, the Ag sector is still on fire!! To boot, as long as the mandated "ethanol boondoggle" continues I will be long in this entire sector. Thirty percent of corn is now grown for fuel. Corn-based fuel is a waste of money and energy. CORN IS FOOD!!! (and our politicians are idiots, not just evil and crooked)
Also, DE has one of the more reasonable fundamentals in its sector, although its expensive by my standards, unlike Terra Nitrogen (TNH) - my personal favorite in the Ag sector (Note: I owned TNH throughout the downturn from October 2007 until now and it NEVER turned negative and it pays a ridiculous dividend).

Deere is a great firm -- a global powerhouse. Expect it to underperform if the U$ Dollar rallies. Ethanol pressure also mounting.
