The Walt Disney Company (DIS)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Walt Disney Company, together with its subsidiaries, is a diversified worldwide entertainment company with operations in four business segments: Media Networks, Parks and Resorts, Studio Entertainment and Consumer Products.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

economy taking a downturn, and more and more and more consumers creating their own content to compete with Big Media. There is too much bureacracy in these companies to respond to this threat quickly. If Rupert can steal MySpace for 500 mil - maybe he can do it, but I think these guys lose out in ...More

diverse operating model and surprises at the park gates will serve DIS well, and lead to estimate beating performance while competitors lag.

Disney is a good company that is currently undervalued due to the state of the market ... I do not think we have really started to see the gains that we will with Disney but they will be there over the next couple of years.

As the dollar declines, the US becomes a favorite destination for foreign visitors. Well, most Bulgarians probably never heard of the Alamo, but everyone knows Disneyworld. Count on a lot of foreign visitors to the parks in the next 2 years. Also, trips overseas for the middle class is just too expensive. So, look for US families to split the difference and stay domestic. Most Americans probably never heard of the Alamo, but everyone knows Disneyland.

Also, ABC, ESPN, Pixar all do well in a down market. People stay home and watch TV. Sports helps during a bad spell. It is an election year and loads to spend on the TV. Look for TV revenue to be up, up, up.

great article in the economist about them last week (movie production side). just a good article in wsj about them as well. jumping in right after a +3% day and after being up 16% in the last 3 weeks, so more discipline would probably be smart, but the value still seems good for the long term

Disney has shown excellent progression since the 1920’s putting it as a great buy at anytime. With Mickey Mouse being one of the largest children idols in the world there’s no way Disney could go wrong. Three Classic Fairy Tales is a new on stage show that will grab people’s attention all over the world. Also with C. S. Lewis’s novel series The Chronicles of Narnia starting to take off into an on screen adventure I believe that this will drive Disney ratings through the roof. A few more Disney movies include: High School Musical, Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure. With those behind your sails of profit you’ll be on the fast track to wealth. Disney is a fast moving steam ship, constantly expanding on a global scale, and there not running out of steam any time soon. “Today, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts operates or licenses 11 theme parks on three continents, along with 35 resort hotels, two luxury cruise ships and a wide variety of other entertainment offerings” Says Disney. So without further gilding of the lily, Invest and enjoy the magic of Disney!
