Terminal business model.

a quick look at the numbers tells me that a DTV short, DISH long is guaranteed to produce a positive return.

Severely undervalued stock - just ask Warren Buffett

TV is coming through the internet

Current advertising campaign is quite catchy, I think. Hard for any football fan to resist. Low P/E, very good forecasted future earnings. The whole space is going through changes with the Netflix transitions, but I think DTV will do well.
Recs
Definitely undervalued relative to their growth prospects. I think that missing out on Hulu is a blessing in disguise and will allow them to instead put that money into their core business, where a high ROE will lead to continued earnings beats.

The strike is over! DirecTV makes gains based on an exciting upcoming season.

It offers a unique product that consumers want. No other company can provide everything they do.
Yes, there are cable TV providers, but they don't have cable everywhere and most of it cannot deliver the same high quality level of programming. This is especially true in emerging markets like Latin America. Think soccer fans like watching the World Cup on old analog televisions? Nope, once they see a match in HD, they are spoiled and they want it in their home as well.
This is one reason DirecTV added 1.2 million new customers in Latin America in 2010. You want to own a piece of this growth.
DirecTV's operations in Central and South America are already providing over 15% of the company's operating earnings, and this year looks even better than last.
What about other satellite providers?
Two words...Exclusive content. Want the NFL Sunday Ticket? It's only available to DirecTV subscribers. Gonna catch the 4th season of Damages? DirecTV produced it and it's only available to their subscribers.
DirecTV is an innovator. Their shows have won six emmys and they hold hundreds of patents. With over 170 HD channels and 100% digital content, they have beaten the cable companies in customer satisfaction the last 9 years.
Shares are trading at a reasonable PE of 12.4 forward earnings and an aggressive buyback program could reduce outstanding share another 20% over the next 2 years.
It will be an epic win!

Earnings rising nicely and best of breed.

DTV is currently on sale because of worries about the NFL labor strike, if there is no NFL there is no NFL Sunday ticket. They are expected to add 1.5 million subscribers from Mexico which is impressive since last year they added 1.2 million due to the world cup hype. They also have a large market share in Brazil who is having more and more middle class families with disposable income.

Have any of you actually had a chance to use this service? This has to be the worst customer service company I have ever encountered, even including cable TV companies and health insurers. Take a look at the BBB site (F rating) or the dozens of blogs and boards at various sites. It will cause you to sell your stock before your jaw hits the ground.
This company will grow through new customer acquisitions but in the long run, will crumble under retention issues.
I would love to see some responses from the CAPS crowd on your experiences with this company.

Where I live, most everyone I know who had DirecTV has switched to ATT U-Verse. ATT is cheaper, more reliable (weather), more HD channels, more sports channels, and they provide HD equipment initially at no charge. My son wanted a HD receiver to add to his DTV service and they wanted over $200 for the unit. He switched to ATT (which he swore he would never do because of his lousy phone service) and they provided him with two HD receivers at no charge. Plus, you get superior wireless internet service cheaper than any alternative I have found (free modem). DTV recently announced a 4% price increase. I think they'll lose significant market share to ATT or cut margins to compete. Either way, DTV should suffer. I've had U-Verse for about 6 months and rate it superior to DTV.

PayTV in trouble because of internet video

The next area where the bubble might burst.....

PE over 20 compared to DISH? .... one is too high, one is too low. Same % on sales, debt equal. Not worth the premium.
Recs
DTV will lose their custormer base. They have significant issues with training their customer service folks and technicians; and reliability of the service stinks. These issues will cause them to lose customers in droves.
