increasing energy prices; gulf mexico strike
Recs
Devon is a sound, if average oil and gas explorer with one outstanding exception. It has a 25% stake in what could be the largest under sea oil field to be found in the U. S. Gulf in the last 40 years. Preliminary estimates are that this field could increase known US oil reserves by as much as 25%. For a company the size of DVN, such a stake is huge. CVN is one partner and I think a likely buyer once the size of the field is better known. I don't see much downside. Take a half position now and buy on any dips.

Their property in tertiary layers in the Mexican Gulf will probably give the value a second boost. The capitalization of the company is 20% less than a pure sale of their current reserves of 2,376 (end of 2006) MMBoes (Million barrels of oil equivalesnts, valuing the on-going concern negatively.

Deep-sea exploration, attractive target for acquisition by the big boys...

steady performer
Recs
Devon is the most underpriced of all of the large independent E&P producers. With their recent discovery in the ultra deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, their proven undeveloped reserves have increased dramatically. Medium term the price of oil will fluctuate, but long term supply is not increasing as fast as demand, most of the supply is in countries with a great deal of political risk, and its eventually being used up. Devon will have relatively low risk (hard and expensive to get to, but low risk) production from the Gulf of Mexico, in addition to their current domestic production.
