While their involvement in the fuel cell arena is a long way from pay-off, many other niches are strong or becoming so. Their PV, battery, and solid hydrogen storage are good examples. The application of amorphous materials to the semi and optical areas hold great potential. Business wil continue to improve.

The Solar Ovonics Unit has developed a thin film that can utilize different light types to make electricity, this holds the current world record for conversion eficiency for a-Si solar cells.
Combined with their proprietary manufacturing machinery, they could be the low cost high efficiency solution in solar tech.

I don't think much of their thin-film solar compared to the CIGS variants out there - but this stock has been punched in the nose quite a few times and I believe the punching has stopped. Not where I would put long-term solar investments.

Many changes have takes place at ENER from the time that Fortune article was published, i believe Morningstar sums it up the best:
"Energy Conversion Devices has transformed itself from a research company into a viable solar company over a very short period. This conversion was spurred by a new management team that came in and put an emphasis on manufacturing discipline and teamed up with distribution partners"
I will be the first to admit that the solar market is saturated and isnt one of the best of the alternate resources but ENER's culture of innovation and research should see it well ahead of the others in this sector.
