Electronic Arts, Inc. (ERTS)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company develops, markets, publishes and distributes interactive software games that are playable by consumers on video game consoles, personal computers, mobile platforms and online.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

The video game industry is going through many changes right now. It's seeing a rise of the smaller developers because of more casual games coming into the market from PC, to console games to even cellphone games and the availability of digital distribution. On the other hand, because of rising costs...More

Activision's recent merger with Vivendi is a huge negative for EA. Suddenly they are no longer the top US video game publisher and investors tired of a slow start to the new product cycle are impatient with EA. There will be tremendous pressure on EA to acquire Ubisoft (it already owns a 20% stake)....More

Even with the current economy, I think that the new releases (GTA4) are going to push this stock into a better position. Gamers are always looking for new challenges, and any gamers that are sports fans definitely have a good many games to choose from. Games are also something that many people go to for relief from the everyday life, which as times get tougher, sales may drop but gamers are always looking for a better game to use as an escape.

Given the recent economy downfall, one area that seems unaffected is video game software.

ERTS, Electronic Arts, also known as EA. Makers of the EA Sports line, as well as owners of other developers. They own Maxis, creators of the Simcity and The Sims, releasing Spore later this year, many expect Spore's success to be comprable to The Sims. They are currently in process of trying to takeover TTWO, trying to gain the Grand Theft Auto franchise for themselves. TTWO is also the only other major competitor to they're EA sports line, with the 2k series. Many game nerds dislike ERTS as they will buy out successful smaller companies and churn out their games with varying degrees of quality.

Take Two has a bombshell on its hands with GTA4 with first week sales expected to be in the realm of $400 million. Flush with this new cash, Take Two is going to be a strong position to either push EA's buyout off or insist on a much better deal.
