This is an undervalued stock, even if you believe that the nuclear industry in this country will not grow. Furthermore, Obama seems to be behind nuclear and nuclear is just a much more feasible solution right now than wind or solar. There are a lot of companies working on development of newer nuclear reactors that are around 1/10 of the size, 1/10 the cost, and 1/10 the MegaWatt Output. The advantage of these smaller reactors are numerous: it's much easier to secure funding for reactors this size, it's much easier to get the appropriate permissions (many existing facilities were granted the rights to build 2 or 4 reactors on their facility, yet most only built 1, and these can be built at the manufacturer and shipped by rail to the final location.

The stock is oversold based on management turnover at the top 2 positions, hopefully the new team can continue and the stock price will rebound nicely.

Nuclear>wind>nat gas.>coal>solar

Wind and Nuclear will be put on steroids by the govt come 2012.

This is one of my top nuclear plays. Kind of expensive right now, but still a good long term bet.

In 1849 would you have rather owned several mines or a pick and shovel company?

If ES wins the lawsuit allowing Italian waste, the stock with appreciate quickly. The company made a brilliant stroke when it offered to share 50% of profits, up to $1.5 billion over a decade, with the state of Utah if it will allow the importation of foreign waste. It's not often legislators can turn down that kind of money. If ES wins the lawsuit, it won't matter.

ES provides waste removal services to many energy companies, particularly nuclear waste. This will become very profitable once nuclear energy is used more (may take a few years).

As much as we think that Nuclear is a bad word, it is used every day in thousands of hospital for imaging, health care, etc. Energy Solutions has recently expanded it's plant, and will be an ongoing concern as the baby boomer's get older and increase the use of nuclear medicine to improve the quality of life and extend it. So, the waste material from the health care industry hat needs to be disposed of will continue to grow.

This stock is one of the most practical IPOs to have come out in the last few months, the others being Gushan Environmental (GU) and Titan Machinery (TITN). Energy for one, is obviously a good play---and Titan due to rising ag.--- however, both companies have shown extraordinary numbers. Out of these three stocks ES is the most skeptical, but I think it also shows the most promise. The US lacks a real nuclear output and this company is extremely solid with exceptional management. I think this is a long buy and hold type stock. If you have 20 years to sit around with this stock I think it's an excellent play. I don't expect us to switch to nuclear over night. If you are doubtful of this stock I suggest you do some research into both the field of nuclear energy and this stock in particular, I think you'll lose that doubt quite fast. If you feel like being less speculative and don't have much time to wait around, turn to the other IPOs mentioned above.... or you could wait for the VISA IPO to price and I think you could make money hand over fist in a few short years (or if you want to be really speculative turn to Nanosphere (NSPH) ). Sorry this is a little "bloggish" but the point I was trying to make is that right now I think good IPOs are hard to come by and the few that are available should follow the simple rules of supply and demand... low supply of good IPOs, high demand for them--- that is of course if you agree with my premises and opinions.

Solar stocks have had their moment in the sun this year while another alt energy sources have been somewhat ignored (with the exception of Iowa primary politician pumped sham that is Ethanol). But let's be honest solar is not going to be able to provide enough energy to replace the big guns of oil and coal in large numbers anytime soon. Solar is still too pricey and their are material shortages and design inefficiencies to overcome. Not to mention the senate shot down a bill wednesday that would have spurred a lot of investment in it.

So where does that leave us? Well ethanol sounds great but ethanol from corn is as dirty as oil.Hydro? Well hydro is very limited by available locations and environmentalists are advocating ripping down dams that do exist. Geothermal? has wide uses for heating and cooling buildings but again as a power source has limited available locations. Wind? requires too much acreage to be too attractive on a large scale. Plus migratory Birds tend get chopped up by the fans (again angering the enviro crowd).

So that leaves with us nuclear energy industry which Energy Solutions does. But is ES the right nuclear play right now? Well it might be a bit premature but it does look like it could be. The financials are a little bit messy, R&D costs are way up (which probably prompted the public offering) and overal earnings are way down from 2005. But they do seem to have good margins and should benefit strongly if regulators are kind to them.

Regulatory issues will be critical as nuclear waste disposal is a Very hot topic politically. Consider it the the ultimate case of NIMBY. ES could benefit immensely from this if they provide politicians with a win win answer to their Yucca Mountain dilemma if their recycling of waste is as productive as they claim
