it not a matter of bailouts but TIME to reform and one after another handouts will eventually stop and then it is forced reform and time to heal.

Awful demographics plus euro-zone uncertainties. I expect the latter will be resolved within a year.

The former, however, will only really be addressed when the nation opens up immigration to North Africa and/or the Middle East. This might not happen. It's possible Italy will no longer play a role in the world's economic affairs.

This isn't Greece. Yes, Italy's debt burden is high, but it wouldn't take much to close the deficit - say, getting people to actually pay the taxes they owe, or maybe some competence and professionalism in government... hey, it's possible. So no true debt crisis, and only a very mild austerity required. And meanwhile, Italian companies are doing very well and selling very cheap.

Italy's long term debt problems have led to strong debt management and prevented excessive losses in current crisis. Stable, with possibly good prospects for future.

Italy, like the other G7 nations, will most likely experience a recession. At least, according to Mish Shedlock. Check out the Point and Figure triple bottom breakdown of EWI on StockCharts.com
