EZCORP, Inc. (EZPW)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company is primarily a lender or provider of credit services to individuals who do not have cash resources or access to credit to meet their short-term cash needs.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

All good enough for my money. I only suggest stocks that I own !

See 'Investment Analysis Clubs / Dynamic Value Investing' board and my CAPS profile for further excellent companies selling at a discount to Maxprice with excellent current metrics. CAPS only shows my selections over 100Mill (unfortunately due to restricted lower market cap applied by MF CAPS).

As stated on the 'Investment Analysis Clubs /Dynamic Value Investing' board my aim is to obtain up to 50% returns p.a. as Buffett stated he could obtain (3 times) recently. A very difficult task but you can follow along with my buys and sells on my CAPS page, where I put my money where my mouth is . If I perform well I hope you can benefit. If not , feel free to ignore my comments. CAPS allows each and everyone of us to be clinically judged on our stock picking abilities over the LONG TERM.

Please always do your own due diligence before investing.

What a week!

This has been an extremely volatile week, and in my Real World portfolio I am closing positions on SPN, NE, and AMX. Happily with a gain in the first two, but I admit to a loss in AMX (second time I’ve owned it, and made the first time, so I’m consoling myself with that). Now what to do with the funds this frees up, especially in this uncertain climate?

There are very few stocks which I am finding that match my criteria as of this writing, a reflection of the bear’s grip we find ourselves in. One of the few is EZCorp, (EZPW).

I’ve owned EZPW before, and it is a roller-coaster ride, but one that I believe will do well for the remainder of 2008.

2006 was a monster year for it. I actually screened it in Feb 2006 and have kicked myself that I didn’t buy it them. I foolishly (small “f”) let my emotions do the thinking and turned away from them because of their industry. But the numbers don’t lie, and we need to let logic, not emotion do the thinking when investing.

About those numbers, EZPW currently trades at a PE of 16.25, but has a forward EPS growth forecast of 19% over the next five years, and 29% over the next two, and has beaten estimates the last four quarters by an average of 3%. Profitability indicators range from a Profit Margin of 10.4% to ROE of 19.8%.

I run four separate valuation models when I select I stock, and use the lower of the four. The range of values I calculate are a low of $21.75 to a high of $24.96. The stock currently trades at $16.41, suggesting that it is at least 33% undervalued.

A look at the ten-year history shows a growing, profitable, but small and volatile. If you are considering buying the stock, please research carefully. I consider myself “quant” rather than a “story” investor, but I have to say that given the current economic climate EZPW should do well. That does not mean that I am bullish nor bearish on pawnshops in general.

I will be putting real-world money on it as it looks like the best opportunity out there at this time.

Happy investing.

Strong earnings, healthy return, decent profit margin, and today announced that 2008 will be much better than anticipated on strength of higher than expected gross profit and fewer bad loans than anticipated.

It feels a bit exploitive to pick a pawnshop in the midst of a big economic downturn... but such is life. Outperform.

Not a glorious segment...and a tinge of "financial" keeps it down. But it's got a Forward P/E under 9, and a 20% ROE. No debt. This one looks like a clear winner.

The only potential downside is government regulation. But EZPW operates primarily in Texas and the SW where regulation is not on the horizon, and it is expanding its business in Mexico.
