Sells to four types of customers: government, oil/gas/minerals, semiconductors and biotech. First three are cyclical, cycles are down. Sales process is long with value often $1 million+. Will underperform until commodity prices are up and semiconductor needs new round of ever-smaller....

Even excluding the impact of foreign exchange, company revenue only grew 4% YoY in Q1 2015. And I calculate that TTM EPS only grew 2.7% YoY.

My impression is that management still pitches FEI as a growth company — aiming to grow the top line at 12% compounded annually — but is perhaps concerned about its future prospects and beginning to manage for slower top-line growth: pursuing larger acquisitions, buying back shares, doubling the dividend (after increasing it 50% the year before), reducing costs (it’s taken “restructuring charges” every year for the past 3 years, including a significant one in 2014), focusing on improving margins, and also focusing on cash flow. Most of these efforts are good for shareholders — I have no complaints about any of them, other than potentially the acquisition risk — but taken as a whole, I can’t help but wonder if they represent an attempt to drive EPS growth as organic revenue growth slows.

2015 looks like it’ll be a decent year if management’s estimates are correct. If the market believes the company will continue to grow earnings into 2016 and beyond (and it certainly might through its various efforts to boost EPS, even if revenue growth doesn’t substantially improve), and awards a similar P/E as today, there could be reasonable upside from today’s prices. But the current forward P/E is 21, and that seems a lot more reasonable to me until the company can demonstrate an ability to reaccelerate and sustain higher growth.

Overall, I’m pretty neutral on this company as an investment. I think its stock will appreciate over time, but I’m not convinced it will be market beating unless revenue growth reaccelerates.

Too expensive. The price to sales and the price to free cash flow are both too high. The P/E is a touch high. It's likely the reversion to the mean will put downward pressure for a quarter or so.

In promising technology area; moderate P/E of 17; steady price appreciation at 33% for 1 year and 200% for 3 years; modest market cap at 2.3 billion: 5 star caps rating with very high percentage of outperform picks

In the last five years FEIC has not grown its market significantly although I see it has a strong buy by 8 analysts.

Testing out a portfolio of smallish-cap 5-star stocks found using the CAPS screener. All picks have at least 50 allstars backing them, which should be enough to minimize star rating fluctuations. It's only been about a week, and I expect a LOT of volatility, but I have high hopes for market beating performance. Time will tell...

Nano tech. This is the future. Period. Most of what is being developed using the machines manufactured by this company is still at the R&D university level. Commercialization is only a few years away. Gates etc, are heavily invested at this time in the R& D. A nanotech company that makes money. Research pays for this one. Long term.. big winner IMHO.

Nanotech is growing fast and would seem to be one of the waves of the future. FEI's earnings and sales are both up and they are supplying equipment to a growing industry. Should do well .

Nano development research money is being spent with FEIC now. Future quality control instrumentation will be needed in the future. Stock looks like a good buy to me.

Disclosure: I do not own stock of this company.
