I've used Fiserv as a previous CAPS pick and continue to like what's going on there. Fiserv is a hugely diversified financial company, owning numerous businesses that service every aspect of the financial realm. I personally, own stock and work for a Fiserv company -- in the automotive side of their service business. In my case, we strategically mitigate the potential losses of a bank's automotive portfolio. It's no mystery that the economy is struggling and as times are tough, auto reposessions continue to rise. In the current recessionary economy, banks, credit unions and similar will be looking to ease their portfolio and accnt. servicing pains -- this is exactly what Fiserv does, and does well. The company's diversity and breadth of unique in-house businesses continues to increase. I like FISV at these current levels (being $32 as I write this) and would look to the long-term on this play. Looking forward perhaps 24mo+ before we're back to near $55-$60 levels. Fiserv's good history of buybacks and stock-splits is positive. The need for Fiserv-style services is only going to increase as we begin to dig ourselves out of these difficult economic times and I look forward to being onboard when we do!

As financial institutions look at increasing their customer service profile while lowering costs, FISV stands to benefit. The largest provider of online bill providing and paying services, FISV can increase online banking services wile replacing some in-house IT staff, a cost-effective trade-off especailly for mid-sized institutions that are under tremendous pressure
Last year the aquired CheckFree. While this move will impact earnings in the short-term, it provides FISV with a complete package of first-rate online services to sell.
They also are aggressively courting overseas markets and should be making a great deal of headway over the next several years.

As Banks and other Financial Institutions seek to lower their cost of doing business an obvious expensive area is maintaining an in-house data-processing infrastructure. FIserv provides a high-quality often lower cost way for financial institutions to process their account data.
The shares at $48.56, are currently selling nearer to the lower end of the $44-$59 trading range than to the high. FIserv's stock is currently undervalued somewhat in my view. The stock is a BUY at less than $49.00 per share for the long-term.

FISV has had strong yoy earnings performance and consistent profitability. This is a buy and forget pick.

As an industry insider (a credit union employee) FiServ's core processing technologies leave much to be desired. Besides putting band-aids on outdated technology, many other industry vendors are dropping partnerships, or not pursuing, because they are such a challenging company to work with. The core processing market is ripe for change and FiServ will not be able to innovate enough to stay in the game.

Great acquistion of Checkfree. This will make their moat even stronger.

The announced purchase of CheckFree will add value to shares. It is an interesting niche in the increasingly battled financial industry.
