ProFlowers deservedly has the reputation to crush the competition. I was a happy stockholder until they were taken private. I would buy back in if I could. I am also a happy customer of ProFlowers. After many orders, even the problems were handled efficiently. Their email marketing is a bit overdone IMHO but other than that, I think they're in a good place. FLWS is the same as they have always been... expensive, relying on too many independent distributors to come through with a consistent product.

In NYC and on the radio, I saw Proflowers, Proflowers, Proflowers.

Sure, FLWS shows up on google searches, but their prices, and especially customer reviews, bite. People especially complain about local flower distributors substituting the wrong flowers in sparse arrangements.

FTD is likewise to FLWS. Expensive, unreliable products compared to competitors that ship directly from the field.

It is a “Bed of roses” in the short run for 1-800-FLOWERS, Inc, operating as a gift retailer in the United States. It provides various gifts products, including flowers, plants, gourmet foods, cookies, candies, wine, and gift baskets to customers worldwide. It offers gifts through the internet and company-operated or franchised stores. At present it operates through 15 floral retail stores, and has 9000 members.

The company has been growing both organically and through acquisitions. Recently it acquired Wind and Weather due to which its current quarter’s revenues saw an upward momentum. It has been acquiring various companies, since 2001, and thus has diversified its business from flowers, to other gift items like chocolates, cookies, and toys and, at the same time, grow its revenues.
The major revenue driver for the company is its E-commerce segment. Revenues from this segment are growing at a much higher rate than other segments. Over all Retail E-commerce sales has increased 24% just within this holiday period (Nov-Dec) compared to last year’s. It is believed that revenues from this segment will continue to grow with customers finding internet the most convenient mode for purchasing its goods. The company has also prepared well for the festive seasons by introducing various new arrangements of flowers from well-known designers and this is expected to translate into higher revenues. However, the company has been incurring losses but these losses are declining quarter by quarter.
Despite losses, we believe that with the growth in E-commerce segment and increased sales in the festive season, the company will see a marked improvement in its performance and this is expected to culminate in growth in share value.

From footnoted.org:
Last year, 1-800 Flowers (FLWS) disclosed for the first time that the sister of Chairman and CEO James McCann and President Christopher McCann was paid $129.5K to be a "personality expert designer", ..... But this year’s proxy is even better. Sister Julie Mulligan still has the same job. But this past year, she made a heckuva lot more according to the proxy filed late Friday: $330K, which the proxy noted was largely due to the $200K bonus she received for these products that bear her name.
But that wasn’t the only thing interesting in the proxy. There was also another new relative who popped up — James McCann’s daughter Erin. Like Mulligan last year, it’s not clear if Erin is a new hire or just a new disclosure since her salary just exceeded the $60K cut-off that requires companies (at least for now) to disclose the transaction.
And speaking of salaries, investors have to wonder why the Brothers McCann continue to collect hefty paychecks, while the stock continues to tank. ..... James McCann’s salary has been frozen at $975K for the last three years; his brother Chris has seen his salary increase nearly 20% over the past two years. ..... investors haven’t fared quite as well. Indeed, the numbers included in the proxy statement show that $100 invested in 1-800 Flowers stock in July 2001 was worth $38.88 at the end of June.

Therefore, I choose this to underperform.
