The recovery in bank stock share prices are not yet warranted. The recent rally in the financial stocks, including the banks, has been based on something other than fundamentals, which means that their current price valuation are based mostly on the “good will” of the investor. But this type of asset is difficult to value and usually overvalued, which means that the real price for this stock should be much lower than the closing price today.

Financial stocks carry a P/E ratio of 22.4, and the so-called "recovery" has been especially strong in bank stocks. Therefore, I’m concentrating my shorting interest in the banking sector.

FMBI will outperform the S&P 500 because it is a local bank with strong ties in the community. Very little real estate exposure in its portfolio. The company is strengthing its overall capital position

Extremely well run bank that has sidestepped the subprime and credit mess almost entirely. Pays a good dividend and the Q2 earnings were solid. Good balance sheet and conservative management. Stock is simply priced too low but I'll wait for the correction while I get an 8% dividend yield.

Quality management and high buy-out potential. This stock has been the speculation of takeover rumors by west coast banks looking to expand for a year or two (back when the stock was regularly trading in the $35 range). At this price, I expect a buy-out at the first sign of a recovery in the financial sector.
