Since originally developing its mining operation in Western Australia, Fortescue Metals Group has reduced its costs for iron ore down to $11.65 a tonne. With iron ore selling at $76 a tonne (62%, CFR China), it can be a very profitable business. The problem Fortescue has been facing for the last year is that 62% iron purity level has become more important to their main customer, China. What was once a 5 or 10% discount for less pure ore has now greatly expanded, as China seeks to reduce pollution generated by steel mills by switching to high grade ore. Fortescue's December 2017 delivered product included 58.3% iron content ore that sold for at a 29% discount, and 56.7% iron content ore that received a 40% discount. Fortescue's competitors, Rio Tinto, BHP and Vale, are all able to deliver the higher grade ore China wants. That is why this CAPS pick from 2009 is not in the green today.

This company has done most of the heavy lifting to become the fourth largest iron ore producer in the richest iron deposits in the world. China is set to come back strong and this company is in position to scoop up the profits.
