GeoEye, Inc. (GEOY)

I bought this in CAPS several months ago when there was a story on NPR. The stock was too new for many of my valuations to work well, so this was primarily a gut call. A number of stories in Seeking Alpha and elsewhere bolstered the idea. I haven't found a reason to bail yet, so I have chosen to stick with this for a while longer.

GeoEye has many things going for them, but I think they will see their biggest growth due to the increase in popularity of internet mapping and GPS. The government contracts definitely don't hurt either especially with our current political climate and focus on terrorism, nuclear threats, etc.

It continues to bounce around, but the general direction is up. Look for the next couple quarters to put more clarity into the earnings picture. The more people understand about where the money is coming from, the higher the stock will go.

Well placed as the main tech company who can work with multiple sources. I think that will come into play as GPS ages, but overall I think this is a market with room for growth.

This will play a vital role in the developement of new geothermal energy, mining, war. Very difficult for competition to enter the market AND become a leader.

High revenue growth that makes it to the bottom line

An awesome sci-fi company. I am honestly scared about what the technology and the company can do. But times will change and space will no longer be foreign. This company is very well equipped to contribute to satellite imaging that will be important for government and commercial reasons. If you guys ever read the book "The Next 100 years", space is very important to future politics and warfare because it lifts fog of war. At this price, near its 52 week low, is a good buy for the short term as well as long.

The potential uses for GeoEye's imagery and imagery services is endless. Beyond basic intelligence gathering for the U.S. Govt (39% of their revenues) their product is used by foreign governments and commercial businesses. These uses include vessel tracking, infrastructure planning, environmental,. agricultural, space exploration, humanitarian, oil and gas drilling, mining, mapping and weather monitoring.

Recent accounting problems have caused them to restate several years of earnings, but new vice presidents of Finance and Accounting, should bring this back under control.

The business is very capital intensive and subject to very strict NSA requirements. But the likelihood of the U.S. Govt (or other governments) to internalize this information gathering is probably minimal.

With their new satellite taking pictures, and their closest competitors years behind in upgrades, the revenue stream is still yet to be realized.

GeoEye now has the best satellite imagery available to buy. From a profitable contract with the US Government and the ability to sell imagery to entitities from oil companies to insurance companies to Google, this company is set to grow revenue and the bottom line. Add to this a lack of competition and high costs to compete, GeoEye is a relatively low risk growth company.

Clear leader in an emerging market.

The gevernment contracts sealed the deal for me. That gives them stability of income. Then, they started selling the photos from space online and that will be the part that will help growth once this mess is over.

Provides needed and valuable service of satellite images. Is starting to get notice and positive opinions.

Hey smax, this isn't a soapbox. You wrote a whole paragraph slagging the US, but didn't say anything about this stock.
1) you're an idiot...the current global situation is a result of financial systems around the world (including yours) buying up lots of America's bad debt in an effort to make quick $$. You bought into it, now it's your problem, too. Do your homework before you start spouting about something you obviously are clueless about.
2) It's quite amusing that you gave this American company a thumbs up after blathering on about boycotting the US. And good luck with all that...

3) More importantly, I agree with my fellow fools and all the reasons they have listed here for this stock to outperform! Fundamentally, it looks good and seems to be a bit undervalued at the moment.

environmental mapping and intelligence during a green/high tech administration/new launch in August?

There's an enormous demand for high quality overhead photography, so GEOY should do very well against competitors like SPOT.

How is this not on my CAPS list? I own it--nay, pwn it--in real life.
