Do certain stocks keep going up forever because Baker Brothers has taken a stake, or does Baker Brothers take a stake in stocks because they deserve to go up forever? Is Baker Brothers the air inside the biotech bubble? I won't be answering these questions today, but I certainly would advise anyone against shorting a stock with a Baker component. The valuations move from generous to outlandish to insane and keep going. I know a couple of guys who don't know the first thing about biotech and just follow the Baker Brothers and they're doing a lot better than I am this year.I've never been that kind of follower, so I haven't benefited from any of the meteoric rises in stocks like Synageva, Vanda, or Acadia this year. On the other hand, I'm always willing to try out a new strategy so I'm experimenting with a green thumb on Synageva despite my opinion that the valuation is completely ridiculous. Sebelipase alfa has received Breakthrough Therapy designation from the FDA, although that may turn out to be the modern equivalent of the pointless Fast Track. Enrollment in the ARISE phase II/III trial of sebelipase won't be complete until 2014 and the size of the target population is questionable. LAL deficiency and CESD diseases that I have never heard or seen mention of during a 20 year medical career.
