The small pharmaceutical companies are doing much better than the big players. They are positioned for growth in an area that is growing and is backed by strong demographic drivers.
Recs
Gilead has the best CEO in the business and the best strategy for internal R&D (which has been helped by focus). The need to continue growth seems to be the reason for the acquisitions they have made, and one can only hope that they have done better due dilligence than so many of the pharma/biotech/tech industry acquisitions we have seen.
Recs
Now a big biotech, company has a very strong and promising drug pipeline. I've held this company for about 9 years and continue to believe in it.

As a Doc I can onfirm that they are leader in HIV treatment, but more importantly Tenovir an HIV drug will be approved for Hepatiitis B usage. Current data indicate that it will be the most effective anti Hepatitis B drug on the market with no reported resistance.
Recs
Unfortunately, HIV is not going anywhere for a while; these guys are at the front of the fight.
Recs
This bio tech company is a leader in this industry with few liabilities. They own Tamaflu for bird flu and have abn outstanding licscensing agreement with Roche. Any big outbreak or scare would give them a big bonus 22% of sales
Recs
Sales of Truvada, Viread, Atripla, and Emtriva for the treatment of HIV will continue to grow. GILD trades at a premium to the biotechnology sector based on earnings. But you can't judge biotech or pharma on earnings. It's all about the pipeline and what's ready for approval.
For now, I think GILD should be at $50 or $51 in a year, but any new developments in the pipeline will boost the price. Great upside and limited downside.

Best biomed

Great company, great drugs, more great products in the pipeline, weak dollar and a stock buyback program to boot. What's not to like?
Recs
fast money, stock buyback
Recs
Approval of compounded cocktail of AIDS drugs simplifying regimen of taking so many drugs.
Recs
This company is doing a lot of things extraordinarily well, and has terrific talent at the top. It likes to go where no man has gone before, and into areas of pandemic disease. It is doing very well now, but I look for extraordinary success as it matures.
Recs
Underated but has good drugs in the pipeline
Recs
An investment you can feel good about.
Gilead produces: GiTruvada, a once-daily combination tablet to treat HIV patients who had become resistant to other reverse transcriptase inhibitors, as well as naive patients in a front-line treatment setting, Tamiflu, an orally administered treatment for influenza A and B, AmBisome, an antifungal agent that attacks a broad variety of life-threatening fungal infections, and Hepsera was approved for treatment of Hepatitis B.
According to Smith Barney, "Gilead possesses one of the more promising pipelines in the
biotech industry with aztreonam for cystic fibrosis lung infections, tenofovir for hepatitis B, and GS9137 for HIV."
Make money and support research that helps others live a better life.

Has had a steady run , would expect moderate gains over a period of 1-2 years
