A friend told me this was a good buy 9 months ago. I should have listened then. However, taking a second look now reveals a company trading at very reasonable ratios and bolstered by corn prices at multi-year lows. I think there's more room to run.

After recent discussion of ethanols effiency (1btu in to 1.42btu's out) and effect upon food supplys (negligible) this company seems like the best opportunity to take advantage of the increasing costs of petroleum based energy. They have been buying other ethanol plants out of bankruptcyand borrowing under 6% to do it. The biggest risk is failing to hedge against crop losses and increased inputs, as compared to ethanol sale prices.
The loss of the Federal subsidy is less likely, but ethanol costs less than petroleum at the gas pumps even without the subsidy.

GPRE started in 2006 with no revenue. It will post over $1.5 billion in revenue in 2010 on growing profits. While all the other pure ethanol companies went bankrupt in 2009, they weathered the storm and expanded. When they post their fourth quarter earnings around the end of Feb. the cat will be out of the bag. Predict earnings in excess of $.70/shr! in fouth quarter. With earnings of $3.00 for 2010, and price target of 30/shr. for 2010.

With the addition of two new plants in the fourth quarter of 2008 and two more plants that will post in the third quarter of this year. You are now looking at revenue of over 1.25 billion annually. Break this down to only 25 million shares and you have revenues of $50/shr. Current margins have improved and you should see a nice profit in the second quarter, but the third quarter and beyond should be a screamer if margins hold. Their production is now just under 500/million gal a year. At $.10/gal profit thats yearly earnings of $50 million, or $2.00/shr., but margins are even better than that right now! With a $.20 margin earnings of $4.00, $.30 margin earnings would be $6.00/shr, and so on.

GPRE has been under the radar. It is the only major pure play ethanol company still standing publicly. All the others have gone bankrupt! (PEIX, Verisun, Aventine ). They are accumulating assets, have over $60 in cash, their margins are improving. They shouild show a profit next quarter, and be in position as ethanol becomes in again. The stock is now over $5, their market value is over $100 million, and trading on average is nearing 100 thousand shares a day. Soon analyst will be picking up on this. GPRE will be over $15 before the end of the year, and over $30 by the end of 2010.

I believe that this will be a strong buy and hold. Ethanol stocks will rise as early as mid to end 2007, if not sooner. People, Bill Gates invested $84 million in Pacific Ethanol, the largest distributor on the West Coast. I suspect the Mid-West could you a distributor badly, seeing as though it is where GM, and FORD are headquartered. This is a recent IPO launched plans to make a plant in Iowa. I suspect there will be several Ethanol stocks to benefit greatly from in the future. Stay tuned! The site below has other great alternative energy stocks that could prove outstanding profits. AVR, MGPI, OEL.OB, TGEI.OB, USBE(Public Thru), and DVSA. Sugar may be another alternative investment, as it is used to make ethanol. Research yourself. I could be wrong but I stand behind these stocks 100% for the next 1 to 3 years.
