GRMN is way ahead of the pack, and already into areas of GPS uses that others haven't even thought about. Not sure about their phone idea, but they've got home runs in aviation, marine, personal fitness, etc. ..... and those in addition to a huge percentage of the automotive market. They've simply got the BEST mousetrap, and so far, no one else is doing what they do any better.
P.S. I own 4 of them - all for different purposes!

AS more and more vehicles are equipped with TomTom and navaid technologies, this entire market will benefit.
TomTom has the added burden of the debt they inherited a while back from a corporate takeover. They have responded nicely, but, that does leave a bit of a door open any time there is a hiccup in progress.
Garmin is quickly growing. Not selling the unit count that TomTom is, but it does offer a wider spectrum of products including the largest share of handheld user-friendly GPS units.
I think you've seen Garmin hit it's low recently, and as the technology and the market grow and expand, Garmin will answer with increased sales and earnings growth.

GARMIN has the attributes of a great IPO (described in Tom Taulli's 1998 book), yet it is already a going concern with an estimable worth in place of patents, copyrights, franchises, trademarks & goodwill.
It's in the forefront of bringing point and touch screen surfing to the world of personal navigation devices, with a market predicted to double by 2012. If it was going public today, it would have all the Venture Capitalists it wanted lined up at the door front.
With its prestige and lack of debt and cash horde of $1 billion it can hire all the talent it needs to stay on the leading edge of development. It has the astounding proprietary technology and tremendous market share only dreamed of by an IPO.
It's in all sectors of a large, fast growing GPS market with a track record to prove it, which portends a prosperous future growth rate. It's fierce competition is only proof of the healthy market in GPS navigation, which incidentally is a stellar example of supply side economics, yet the various players in the market are only also-rans compared to GARMIN. It's the King Of The Hill if you remember that childhood pastime and it's not about to be dethroned. It's the company that is truly changing the GPS industry for the better.
Even when GPS navigation becomes a mature industry GARMIN is likely to find the high-growth opportunities. It's products "travel" by having a world-wide use and marketplace. It's now stepping up to applying GPS navigation to the huge cell phone market, which has sales of 150 million units/year--- and much of the world's population hasn't even had a phone yet. It took the phone over a hundred years to get fully developed and GPS has just lately been added.
Telecommunications is extremely technical and specialized which gives GARMIN a competitive advantage with it's proven capabilities. This area itself is a sustainable business built around around a bona fide trend.
It's senior mgmt. are it's founders who have shepherded it to is current pre-eminence and who have a great stake in its continued success. GARy Burrell and MIN Kao have about 88 million shares or 40% of the shares---virtually guaranteeing the co.'s independence. They are relatively young and obviously have the pride of ownership and the vision and motivation to nurture their creation. They seem like the type who might feel a sense of responsibility to those who have come onboard and helped the co's development.
Industry conditions across the board---auto, marine, trail, aviation et. al.---are great for further development. In the aviation sector alone 13,000 small jets are forecasted for production in years ahead, which doesn't even take into account the prop plane and retrofit needs.
According to Jim Cramer, "You should always be vigilant for stocks with double-digit growth rates that sell at single-digit multiples and have big buybacks and dividends...Holy Grail...what we're lookin' for. The cheap price with the dividend and buyback are your downside protection. Stock that had limited downside gained tons of adherents and the upside basically takes care of itself." (JULY PROGRAM)
GARMIN is in the midst of a 15% buyback. It's Forward P/E is 10.19. It's Div & Yield is 1.60%. It's Year Over Year Qtrly. Growth is 34.90%. As for VISIBILITY...in the past year it has signed scores of contracts with major companies.

The price has been flat for about a month even with the bad market conditions. I believe this stock is ready to explode and I don't mean down. It's been beat up by panic sellers for so long I think it's finally calmed down. I recommend a buy on this one.

Strong balance sheet. Undervalued. The world-wide GPS market is rapidly expanding.

In the near future, these navigation systems will tell you more than just where to go, starting with more real time traffic conditions. Garmin is a trusted name who's stock is depressed right now, it should take off again soon. I've been watching this stock fall for a while now. Just bought it. Should see a turnaround.

Good technicals and near 52 week low and increasing ubiquity of GPS devices, but economic slowdown my hurt it in the near term.

just reinvested at $42. Low P/E, excellent product.

The contracts with the high end auto manufacturers is probably the most important indicator. The price or status of a Rolex does not change because a new knockoff hit the market.
The dog collar that allows you to track upto 10 dogs seems like a real innovation. I am thinking of putting one under the seat of my car.
I have a fish finder and I have not heard of a cell phone fish finder.
I'm not sure that I would want to fly in a plane that navigates via a cell phone.
A cell phone GPS would be like the built in cameras. The quality just isn't there. You can also expect a fee on your cell model. The same with some other competitors.

I'm calling the bottom and doubling down.

Declining margins and GPS built into new Blackberry Bold spell trouble for Garmin. A 50% drop from here wouldn't be surprising.

This company is an excellent performer. It is over sold because the sellers don’t understand the PND customer’s use model. Sellers of GRMN don’t understand that GPS PHONES ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE for a Nuvi on the dash. No handheld phone will ever satisfy the customer need like a Garmin Nuvi with its large touch screen, turn-by-turn spoken directions, fast speed of recalculation, great reception, and competitive price. Garmin is the market leader for a good reason and I believe they will continue to be the leader going foreword.

The numbers compared to thousands of other stocks on Investools website show this stock to be poised for a very big ralley, so I bought today in a down market and this baby was up $1.43 :)
