A bet on the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is basically a bet on the general increase in global wealth that seems likely over the next 50 years. With a commanding lead in tires, Goodyear is perfectly poised to take advantage of increasing middle classes throughout the world. After all, increased wealth increases the ability to acquire capital goods. With increased wealth, owning an automobile becomes more realistic for more people throughout the world. Unless we believe that cars will not be utilizing rubber tires sometime soon, I'm pretty sure that we can bet on Goodyear Tire continuing to sell high-quality tires to an increasingly mobile global population. Long term.

Despite a nice rise over the past year, Goodyear's stock is cheap compared to current and even more so compared to its future earnings. The majority of which come from the sale of replacement tires to consumers, the sales f which usually begin to rise ignificantly three years after a spike in auto sales. Add in some cost-saving restructuring and increasing sales in emerging markets and GT should easily outperform what will likely be a sluggish S & P 500. Following Marcato Capital Management and Mick McGuire into ths one.

The auto industry can't tank too much more and cars need tires. This drop is too much and it will come back a little in the next few weeks/months.

This one seems a little iffy to me. Goodyear has been up and down all year, and is now coming up from a low of under $10 in October. Fortune acknowledges that demand for tires is cyclical, and you have to time this stock just right. On the plus side, auto sales are starting to get hot again as people replace their aging vehicles.

While Goodyear can rely on replacement-tire business, the economy is too fragile to make a big bet on autos. There's a reason Goodyear Tire is only trading at five times projected earnings.
