They own LOTS of valuable intermodal track real estate. That is a moat a mile deep. The drop in coal shipments makes me a little nervous for the short term, but I think there are plenty of other commodities/goods to fill the gap. Over the long-run, trains are a cost-effective alternative to trucking. Choo Choo!!

Warren Buffet likes Rail Road Companies, and So do I.

A few positive critical developments for GWR caught my eye when I was researching how GWR services the energy/oil/gas industry (just one of the sectors it services). Among them:
1) Accretion from recent Rail America acquisition should show up on the financials in 2013. This rail system services mid-America and some of the Bakken oil fields requirements.
2) GWR operates many of the short line feeder rail lines and services in the developing Utica Shale region in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. These lines will substantially increase operations/revenue in the latter half of 2013 when well drilling increases in the area. Railroads will be hauling in sands, piping and other heavy construction materials and hauling out petroleum/gas product from the wells and waste materials.
3) In December 2012 GWR signed a contract to provide the rail services to the new $900 million dollar oil and nat gas services, switching and transfer hub being built in Scio, Ohio in anticipation of the increased Utica Shale nat gas and oil shipments. They expect 10,000 rail cars a year to go through this facility. All contracted phases of this hub will be completed by the second quarter of 2014 according to M3Midstream officials. There are other hubs that GWR contracts for as well.
I believe GWR is succeeding in bolstering growth from both acquisition and organic opportunities and I expect 2013 and 2014 will be excellent years for the rail road.

Overowned. Overbought. Too far too fast.

A constellation of "shortline Railroads [remember Monopoly - that was the railroad you could never get to complete the set of four], GWR makes chumo change from a range of enterprises all over America as well as Europe and Australia. They're both a national and international recovery play.

Has grown from a single shortline railroad, to multiple shortlines and rail related services that streamline freight services for larger railroads. They handle work the larger railroads don't want to do. This railroad started just miles from my home and I have enjoyed watching it grow.

Growth in shares is my only hesitation, but revenue and free cash flow have continued to grow, with a varied geographic footprint, I feel this stock will continue to do well over the next few years

GWR is a well run company with excess capacity ready to deploy as demand returns. They are very well positioned to efficiently transport the bulk aggregates that will be needed to supply the infrastructure rebuilding projects in the coming years.

Railroad, Energy efficient, Cost effective, more bang for the transportation buck!
