HSBC Holdings plc (ADR) (HBC)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company provides a comprehensive range of financial services to more than 125 million customers through four customer groups and global businesses.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Two patterns I dream of is a contarian stock coupled with growth. How often do you see a P/E (9.85) relative to the growth rate (20.83%) (over the past several years) in a company this size.On top of that the price/dividend ratio is very attractive. Its pre tax profit margins are near 30% .... WOW!<...More

HSBC was the johnny come lately of the Mortgage lending industry. They got their coffers full of JPY carry trade money and started borrowing, " Getting a loan, is as easy as 1,2,3 with HSBC" Said one of their slogans. The problem is, if banks were doing heavy mortgages from 03-04-05, HSBC just start...More

Let me get this straight. This global bank didn't underwrite ANY mortgages? Oops! I see from a quick glance at the latest quarterly that HBC in fact DOES originate mortgages. The HUGE open put interest at the $70 strike seems to agree. HBC will have to come clean and write down assets or raise capital like everyone else.

UNDERPERFORM.

HSBC, the “H” stands for Hong Kong, “S” stands for Shanghai and “BC” stands for Bank Corporation. HSBC born in Shanghai grew up in Hong Kong and moved to London before 1997. It has been the virtual Central Bank for Hong Kong over fifty years and it is still printing money for Hong Kong. Yes, actually printing money. People in Hong Kong call it Hong Kong Bank. After HSBC took over Midland Bank, one of the big four banks of UK, it moved to London. So HSBC is an Asian Bank and European Bank. And it is now the second biggest bank in the world and slowing moving into US and China. No wonder HSBC calls itself the world’s local bank.

HSBC lost billions in subprime last year but it still has 20 billions USD profit. This is net profit. That is the reason why it only drops around 15% during this crisis compare to 30 to 50% off of other banks. The stock is being traded in US, HK and London 24 hours a day. You will see it goes up fast or go down fast. If it goes down to low 70s or even 60s, you should back up your truck.

Europe and US housing Slump will eventually get these guys. HSBC has only fallen 10% since march whilst most other banks have been cut by 30% to 50%. HSBC's performance is not inline with business realities in the US and in Europe (the latter of which is deteriorating very quickly).

The Asian real estate boom will result in the next phase of write offs as market values start to decline.
