The rate of decline in existing home sales appears to have slowed and while I don’t think we’re at the bottom I do believe it’s a good time to invest in both Home Depot and Lowes.

I see good potential for upside in both companies based on: the tiny growth expectations analysts have set (

Its the season for the do-it-yourself. With the economy in the slumps, more homeowners who have been able to hold on to their homes will be looking to general stores like HD since they can't afford a contractor to go get discounts from individual suppliers.

the homeowner improvers and do it yourselfers are back. You can see that the traffic in HD storers is much greater. Hopefully HD will be able to net enough to pay their dividend and not increse debt during the nation's long recovery period. If so, HD will grow its value in the market as a safe place to put yor investment funds.

the market has a pessimistic long-term outlook for Home Depot. operating margins averaged nearly 11% over the past five years when the company owned the less-profitable HD Supply business. We remain comfortable with our long-term revenue growth and profitability assumptions. In my opinion, Home Depot is well positioned to emerge from this cyclical downturn as a more dominant force in the home-improvement market."

I shop both stores, but there is just something about Lowe's store environment that draws me in more.

The housing market may or may not hit a bad patch over the next few years, but who cares unless you have to sell during the bad patch.

The important thing is that the stock is currently selling at a discount valuation to the market and by the end of 5 years, it will be back to selling at a market multiple on earnings that are 50-60% higher.

HD has competition, but acts like it doesn't. Many weaknesses in retail delivery, compared to Lowe's and OSH, or even Wal-mart. It's hard to win back customers once they leave in disgust. Unless management understands the customer perception and does something about it, HD will continue to lose market share.
