vs101 pitch:
HDFC Bank is an Indian bank and is listed as an ADR under the ticker HDB in the NYSE. In the past 5 years, it has gone from 12 to 64.
It is a private sector bank in India. In 2009 the Indian Government will open foreign banks to come and buy stakes in private sector banks to raise capital. There is a good chance that Citigroup might want to buy HDB at that point, but it will surely trade at a huge premium in 2009. I think the next few years will be better than the last few.
Citigroup has about a 15% stake in its parent company HDFC and HDFC has about a 15 - 19% stake in HDFC bank.
I believe that HDFC bank will soundly beat the S&P over the next 2 - 4 years. It is growing for the last 10 - 12 qtrs at 30 - 32% consistently.
I have noticed the change in 3 yrs. 3 yrs ago, there were hardly any branches and this year, I could find HDFC bank pretty much everywhere. Still they have lot of room to grow due to low market penetration. Its the best private sector bank in India (word of mouth)

Good Indian bank play long term
Recs
One of the leading "small" banks in India. Aggressively growing its physical locations and its business. 20% growth yoy over the next few yeras.
Recs
overvalued in the short term, with the only fear that its a growth stock, therfore the price could remain stagant with the value catching up in maybe about 2 years.

Continued growth of middle class in India should help this banks earnings, and it is a potential takeover target.

India was among those countries that registered a very low housing loan penetration rate with the outstanding housing loan to the GDP being just 3 per cent as against 51 per cent in the United States, 54 per cent in the United Kingdom and around 10-12 per cent in other Asian countries. The potential in the home loan market sector was immense if India touches the average 12 per cent (outstanding loan to GDP) as several other Asian countries, according to Keki Mistry, managing director, HDFC.
HDFC has provided returns of about 20% over the last ten years. With the Indian mortgage market still in its infancy (growth area for HDFC), it is a safe bet that the Bank will continue to provide good returns over the next 10 years
only 1.5% of HDFC's loan portfolio is composed of nonperforming assets--rivaling banks in developed countries. Fee-generating services--mortgage origination, check-clearing, cash management, and credit card processing--have enabled HDFC to quintuple its fee income over the past four years. While not spectacular, it easily bests HDFC's 14% cost of equity and could get higher still as the bank moves out of its rapid growth phase, becomes more efficient, and build on its fee income. The management team has mostly remained intact since the bank's inception in 1994, which implies that HDFC's success is largely a result of management committing itself to a proven strategy.
Recs
One of the leading banks in the Indian retail market, HDB will fluctuate with home market interest rates. Over the longer term though, growth will be driving by the expanding Indian economy and the size of the middle class there.
