HE has consistently increased book value for the past for years. Additionally, it has a 5 yr average of a 4.9% dividend yield.

One of the major concerns I have is HE's huge payout ratio of 141%. In my opinion, it is comitting too much of its earnings to shareholders through dividends. However, with a book value of only 1.14 the valuation is too hard to resist.

I undertook my investigation of the electric utilities sector starting with the idea that this is a mature sector, probably the first to get out of any slump.

I lived in HI for a period of time and they are the only thing going out in the state .. .constant customer base and gains from the lack of a heating season ... A/C on all the time at most commercial establishments ...

Safe stock in a time of economic duldrums ... Nice yield ... forget bonds, this is the safe stock if you're close ot retiring ... plus, the price can't be beat ...
