Ener1 Inc. (HEV)

CAPS Rating:
*

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

It appears that HEV will begin production under a $70 million contract in January. HEV has publicly stated they anticipate signing an additional two development contracts this year.

I am far more optimistic than others. I believe with the information at hand, the company will be profitable 2010 if not 2009. Let's not forget current profits don't necessarily drive stock prices. The only question is whether or not consumers will look to hybrids for future needs. I believe they will. I am one of the naysayers. I will always have my gas guzzler, but am looking HARD at the Volt and will probably buy in 2010. Of course it will be parked between my Z71 and my Cadillac, but nevertheless. The Volt is a good looking car that can get me to work and back without ANY gas. I refuse to drive the hideous Prius for 40mpg. For that matter I refuse to drive any Toyota.

I personally own this stock and hope it fluctuates down more because I will continue to buy here and there. I feel that strongly about its potential. The only problem to potentially hold back mass production is cost. The plus side for the cost of LIon technology, and all others for that matter, is DoD interest. DoD doesn't care about cost, if they want the technology, they will pay for its development. If HEV can produce enough units, the price per unit WILL surely drop enough to make the batteries cheaper for auto mfrs.

In two or three years, the Li ion battery play may be very good. For now the Volt (WSJ article) is not cost effective to make or drive and the cost of fuel has fallen enough to make the short term need for hybrid cars less urgent. Most people try to avoid version 1.0 of any product, so they will likely wait for a hybrid car which is less expensive and has a longer track record of good performance. Keeping your old car and saving cash is likely to be a resolution for 2009.

Don't get me wrong, this could potentially be an exceptional growth stock someday, but there's simply no way to justify a P/B of more than 20 for a company with no earnings and basically zero sales. It will be years before HEV is profitable.
