It looked like a bad sign to me that they greatly reduced the dividend recently - and gave no explanation to shareholders about why (I was a shareholder with a small position for almost 5 years up until the other day). If they did give notice somewhere, I sure was not able to find the explanation. Also I've noticed the balance sheet keeps adding more long term debt each year. Perhaps they are investing in future business that I'm not weighing in here? In any case, I've decided that their management record and communication/connection with shareholders leaves much to be desired - when compared to the truly great companies that are out there.

Bringing a coal gasification plant online. Coal is plentiful and cheap. If HNP can make it burn cleanly they are onto a winner.

Buffett loves China. Buffett loves utilities. Buffett loves cheap stocks. CAPS may like this play too. In for a few years.

HNP is a power generator that is located where the growth is. A bit heavy on coal generation but the company has very strong political connections.

This stock will outperform because population is continuing to increase at the same time energy needs per capita are increasing in China. Good combo for a Chinese energy company.

P/E of 11 and has a 2.5% div, which was cut from what would be 8% now. This is perfect for people who want a defensive stock, at a good price, that is also immune to the USD, and has a huge potential to yield dividends and capital gains as power demand keeps increasing in China! If you have money that you want to save, this would be a good way to protect your purchasing power, better than a CD I think. Of course it has some serious political risk, but so does the dollar.

Stock price falling while earnings accelerate. One has to change direction, and I'm fairly confident that earnings are not going to turn negative.

We don't need electricity to survive, because we are like cave men and just want the world to die? NOT! Don't forget about those small caps like WUHN,APWR,TSL,NCEN,CWS,JASO,and ESLR either.

Power in China. Up

It's China - they are a serious group and nobody's need is greater.

2013. This is the year that I guarantee this stock price will be much higher than it is today. What happens between now and then, I don't know and I don't care. Just know that invest today in 2009 and in 4 years, have much more money than original investment.

HNP has been killing it in my watch list for months, up over 50% since being added back in November. I thought I already added it in CAPS. Oops.
Agree with everyone who has problems with investing in China. It's tough to get a good read on Chinese stocks. But you (or at least I) can't just ignore the huge Red market and a power grid that will be expanding over the next 2 decades or so. HNP is proven and positioned. Along with YZC (coal) this stock will be added (for the 2nd time) to my real world portfolio.
Who knows about China? Certainly not me. But I'll gamble on HNP again. In theory, it should do very well for a long time. We'll see I guess.

Huaneng Power International (HNP) is having some tough times right now due to the rising clost of coal but they have some very innovative plans and they are HUGE in China and there will always be a need for energy.

Pays a good dividend, and the communist can pour money into the company.
