Hologic, Inc. (HOLX)

CAPS Rating:
*****

The Company is a developer, manufacturer and supplier of diagnostic and medical imaging systems primarily dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of women.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I'm mostly just charting here close to its 52-wk low. Reading the risks from their 10-Q form was like reading the health risks associated with the latest blood pressure pills, and health care stocks are not for those with faint hearts. Management noted very well that there has been extreme difficult...More

For womens gyn care, the Cytec ThinPrep is the industry standard. Cytec (now Hologic) owns all the rights to the ThinPrep supplies as well as all the equipment use to obtain the results.

I used to work in a pathology lab in a very small town in central Florida, the Cytec bill was close to $48,000 a month. The demand is real; give the company time to sort things out, then they will take off. Really folks, they are the only game in town for these types of tests.

Excellent company that specializes in women's healthcare. Overly punished for a tough integration with the massive acquisition of Cytec. Both Hologic and Cytec have had cutting edge solutions that improve women's healthcare. Even bigger winner now they are together and as soon as they get over integration indigestion.

This stock has had the stuffing beat out of it since the Cytec merger, but at $22 it has a lot of upside. Hologic still dominates the digital mammography market. I used to work for Siemens and know -- Siemens licenses HOLX's detector technology (this agreement will end in 2009). Also, they are smart to beef up the diagnotics side of women's health. The acquisition of Third Wave gives them an entree into HPV testing.

Still, there is risk. They have incurred a lot of debt and have issued convertible notes to offset some of it. I'd like to see them concentrate on strengthening the balance sheet, but strategically their moves make sense.

Keep an eye on their NovaSure line. Some softness appeared in Q2.
