20 years ago I was assured that hydrogen was the future. I just don't see it being cost effective or convenient enough to replace the battery technology we have.

The amount of energy necessary for producing hydrogen is smaller than the amount of energy the resultant hydrogen can itself generate. Sort of like a motor turning a generator that powers the motor: something gets lots in the transfer.
