Sun Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA)

CAPS Rating:
***

The Company provides network computing infrastructure solutions that include Computer Systems, Data Management, Support Services and Client Solutions and Educational Services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Sun has heavily repositioned themselves as a vendor of Open Source software and technologies. All of their most important products (Java, Solaris, ZFS, and now MySQL with the recent acquisition) are Open Source, and their strategy, as I heard in a Tech Days keynote, is, like RedHat, is to be a value...More

Sorry, I've just never understood what exactly Sun Microsystems does. Makes servers? Have you read the CEO's blog post? More importantly, could you understand what the hell he was talking about? I didn't think so. But hey, he has a cool poneytail, so I could get hammered.

Java is a major web presence. With new technologies to expand user interface with the Internet and ways to experience websites this is a definite buy. And when the Iphone unlocks JAVA for its phones, all i can say is blue Sky's!

Stock is cheap right now and undervalued by the market. Investors paniced upon announcement of layoffs. Company has solid income and assets. Stock is trading at some of its lowest levels ever and early May should prove to be the best time to purchase for short term gains. This does not preclude the stock from being long-term value.

Tech sector that will lead the comeback. The stock has been beat down in the current market. Asia will help in the recovery.
