A few point:

1) Don't buy bond funds. Buy the bonds themselves. Cut out the middleman and save.
2) If you have to buy a bond fund buy one with reasonable fees. This one charges over 1% while Vanguard has several that charge about 0.11%.
3) Don't buy junk. "High income" bonds (aka JUNK) do not provide nearly enough reward for the additional risk you take on.

I do recommend some bonds in your real portfolio. But I'd short them all in CAPS. Starting with garbage like this.
