People keep chasing yield, chasing safety, chasing this and that. Following the herd doesn't work. This didn't get beaten down enough to beat the markets eventual recovery. The best time to buy this "recession proof" was beginning of 08. Still an excellent value play, though :)

This is a great company, I just don't think it will Outperform the market anytime soon. When the economy recovers, financials will lead the way, followed by oil/energy, retail and then the rest.
You will sleep good at night owning them, but you'll be sleeping on an old mattress because their short-term (2-4y) return will significantly lag the market.

When we're speaking in terms of decades, yes, JNJ will outperform. But when starting at or near the bottom of a market crash, the market simply has more ground to make up over the subsequent 5 year span. This happened after the '01 crash - Dow outperformed JNJ by about 30% through '07 - and I'm betting it will happen again.

Believe that republicians will regain control of the white house and congress, making the economy even tighter, which should reduce the sizes of households, JNJ services mostly households, causing a drop.

While J & J has a lot of products, it's quality if flawed. The commericals to take tylenol only as directed, to help deflect lawsuits because tylenol is the easiest way to kill a liver in a day is getting to be more well known. My friend's little sister died 4./10/08 after taking 8 tylenol PM's not realizing the active ingredient would cause liver failure in 24 hours.
