Journal Communications (JRN) is a Mario Gabelli pick from the last Barron's Roundtable (published in February).

While I completely agree with the popular sentiment that print media is a terrible sector to be in, many people incorrectly look at Journal as just a newspaper company. In reality it owns 13 television stations, 35 radio stations and just one major newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The company does have some pension issues. Gabelli believes that rising interest rates will help with that, but as I have stated in the past I believe that interest rates are going to stay low for a long time, so there's no relief there.

Gabelli values the newspaper at four times Ebitda (I might go even lower than that); the TV stations at 8x - 9x Ebitda; and the radio stations at 7x to 8x. I would personally probably tend to err on the side of caution and value the newspaper and radio at lower valuations. I like the television assets though and think that he could be low there.

If the company were to spinoff the newspapers (ding, ding, a potential special situation) then Gabelli believes that the whole thing would be worth $13 to $15/share versus today's $8 and change.

They will probably see a pop from increased ad spending during the election, but long-term they're done for. The internet is transformative - embrace the creative destruction. Just don't get caught holding the buggy whip manufacturer.

This met a high level screen to indicate a buy and strong outperform against its peers (other tickers in its industry). My 1st version of this spreadsheet devles deep into the company's balnace sheet and recent income statements, combined with other relevant price data for the company including insider/institutional holdings, short interest, debt levels, etc.
Testing capabilities of this 1st version of my automated, valuation spreadhseet matched with my personal criteria and see how it holds up.

This is the one diversified media co. I'm interested in. Great dividend yield. No debt issues, good cash. Making the necessary moves to further itself in the new playing field.
