Former Invitrogen... Makes numerous reagents and tools needed to do research in biochemistry, genetics and DNA technology

Buying your way into being a $7B corporation does not really work. Just ask former WorldCom shareholders.

Lot's acquisitions should play out in the next few years. As well as increases funding from NIH.

I work in the bio field and let me tell you, Life Technologies owns pretty much everything. They have been making acquisitions of small companies left and right creating a moat, because of the high cost of getting into this business. This moat creates a massive pricing leverage, but the quality of their products is top notch so you just suck it up and by their products. With all the stimulus money that should be coming in lots of scientist will begin buying reagents that they had been holding off on. I would hold this company long as I don't see their competitive advantage being lost any time soon

should benefit by expanding levels of NIH funding for biomedical research.

I work in neuroscience/genetic research. And let me tell you - the whole scientific community is dancing in the streets over the stimulus funds that were given to NIH. Currently NIH is offering grants of up to $2million that are dedicated to equipment and infrastructure. Which means that over the next two years, companies that make biological/genetic/laboratory equipment are going to be showing exorbitant growth. I don't know about long-term perspectives on any of these companies, but for the next two years, they're gold.
ILMN, AFFX, LIFE - I'm way long on all three.

Profitable and well-positioned stem cell researcher with massive upside with the new administration.

Purely management, mergers, accomplishments and advances to date. Revenue and Earnings are essential to insure Investors that their investment will grow, not like other companies who have little Income, low sales growth, tremendous debt, and a high burn rate.
In 'LIFE' case, the odds are stacked better for any investor to reap the profits and ensure the safety along the way.

The recent chunk of stimulus money to NIH, one of the largest sources of cash going to LIFE, makes this an incredible deal. People in the research sciences like myself have long used Invitrogen and LIFE products, to generate results. So today's announcement by Jeremy Berg of the NIH that research grants would be injected with 7.4B is a huge win for LIFE.
States Berg:
"NIH is grateful for the opportunity ... to provide economic stimulus to the nation while furthering our mission to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH will receive $10 billion through the ARRA for use over the next two years (2009 and 2010). Of this, $1 billion will be invested in extramural construction, $0.8 billion will be provided to the Office of the NIH Director for extending and developing appropriate programs, and $7.4 billion will be provided to the NIH institutes and centers (proportional to their appropriations). A major consideration is that these funds must be distributed over 18 months to meet the goals of the ARRA. "
There we have it, Fools! More grants, of which ~ 30% goes to materials, and a sizeable amount buying popular LIFE products. I used them for 11 years and they are world class. Glad to be in on this one for the next three quarters while they reap the benefit.
