One of the biggest drug companies in the world. They have several big drugs, and are always have more in the pipeline. They may not have explosive growth all the time, but when they hit on something new they will jump. They have the resources to spend on the development that is crucial for any pharma to have. They also pay one of the larger pharma dividends to tide you through the slow times.

Cialis and Viagra are going to get killed by Palatin's (PTN) sexual arousal drug when it gets approved. It is the first true aphrodisiac that works through the central nervous system and seems to have no side effects. The drug works on both men and women and is in trials for both. All preliminary results show statistically signficant improvements in both sexes. Big pharma's like LLY and PFE will see staple drugs erode and impact margins a lot.

Eli Lilly, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the US, specializes in the discovery, development and marketing of pharmaceutical products. The company’s primary focus has been on manufacturing drugs for neurology related diseases which contribute approximately 43% to the overall revenues.

The company recorded strong growth of 31% in the top line in the fiscal year 2006 was driven by strong growth in the royalty income and continued growth of its existing drugs. It new drug Cialis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction which is co-promoted in joint venture with ICOS Corporation has shown strong penetration as it has managed to capture 27% of the erectile dysfunction market share in the US. The strong performance by this drug is also attributed to 4% increase in the erectile dysfunction market in the US.
In Europe, this drug was able to capture 36.5% of the market in the in the fourth quarter of 2007. Going by the recent progress made by this drug it is on the fast track to graduating into a blockbuster drug.

Investors in the company can breathe a sigh of relief as the company has been able to settle 18,000 Zyprexa related litigations expending less than 700 million. The company intends not to settle the remaining 1,200 cases as it feels it has a strong case to win them. The company has a decent pipeline as one would be closely looking at the prospects of its leading investigational drug Prasugre for the treatment of acute coronary syndrome. This investigational drug is in Phase III of clinical research and is expected to be submitted for NDA approval by the second half of 2007. With no real threat of patent expiry, strong growth in the existing drugs and upcoming phase III results of its investigational drug Prasugre are expected to drive the company in 2007.
