Landec has a synthetic product that is made into a wrap for produce for prolonging shelf life. The liquid state is applied to seeds to assist storage and success as a crop. They reported a nice profit in 06 and added to cash.

I used to work in a produce store, and did a lot of the ordering. Shelf life is more important on the grand scale then to any individual store. Most produce arrives at giant terminals throughout the country, and from there is purchased and transported to company warehouses, or individual stores such as mine. The produce that was sent to the warehouse will eventually make it into a truck destined for an individual store. Shelf-life becomes very important for the warehouse-destined produce because it is in storage for the longest period of time. So a vegetable or piece of fruit that has 5-7 days of shelf-life might only have 1-2 days left since it's been in transit for 4-5 days. With Landec's technology, could potentially double at the individual store level because instead of veggie lasting 1-2 days, it now last 3-4 days. That's some serious improvements, and that's how I view the benefits of Landec's technology.

The permeable polymer membrane that keeps food fresher for longer is a great idea. That has potential in all global markets. I also like the seeds that come up when the soil is right. I think that could have potential in places where rain falls within a limited timeframe. You hear every day about harvests failing and wonder what you can do so from an altruistic POV I'm happy to invest in this stock.

LNDC holds patents on and makes specialty polymers that allow various temperature controlled behaviors. This allows them to make clear bags tailored for specific fresh produce products that "breath" in response to temperature changes. This can greatly improve the products shelf life reducing waste and improving quality to the end consumer. In addition to selling fresh bagged produce in their own packaging they have a deal with Chiquita for banana packaging.

They also have a "smart" seed coating that can keep planted seeds from germinating before the temperature is right allowing for earlier planting or release fertilizer onto the seed at the appropriate temperature. These behaviors can be tailored to different types of applications and crops. Monsanto just bought part of their seed business and made a significant licensing deal for their technology. This should provide them with more predictable and possibly great earnings growth over the next several years.

I think they might take a hit this quarter (Q406) because of all of the recent tainted spinach and other recent produce scares. I imagine this has to hurt sales of their bagged produce. I would see that as a buying opportunity. In addition to the products described above there are several other applications for this promising technology under development any of which could be a hit. Long term I expect this to be a big winner.

Testing out a portfolio of smallish-cap 5-star stocks found using the CAPS screener. All picks have at least 50 allstars backing them, which should be enough to minimize star rating fluctuations. It's been less than a week, but so far so good!

With produce costing more to grow and transport, this companies products will save distributors more money than they cost.
