***

A worldwide operator & franchisor of hotels and related facilities. The Company's six business segments are: North American Full-Service Lodging, North American Limited-Service Lodging, International Lodging, Luxury Lodging, Timeshare & Synthetic Fuel.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

The hotelling industry is going to undergo some very serious changes over the next 5-10 years. I think in the long run this stock is a dog for two main reasons-- and both relate to the industry as a whole, not this company, which is actually very well run (although I should note that even the direc...More

Marriott continues to be the leading destination properties around the world. With the link a few years back of different hotels in every market segment from low-cost comfort with fairfield inn, to extended stay Residence Inn, to luxury and boutiques of Ritz Carlton and Renaissance properties Marriott will continue to have successful quarters.

I've stayed in their hotels at just about every price point they offer. The service is great, the rooms much nicer than the competition. I think the stock's still got some headroom for the following reasons:

1. Higher gas prices may shorten the distance people travel, but they'll still take vacations. To compensate themselves for a less exotic setting, I think they'll treat themselves to nicer accommodations.

2. You might be able to conduct meetings with people you already know via satellite, but nothing will replace a face-to-face meeting when interviewing a potential employee or doing deals with new clients. Residence Inns are great for both. When business picks up, they'll reap the rewards.

3. Management is flexible and customer-oriented, keeping its eyes open for new niches to fill as well as new ways to serve the existing customer base. Loyalty counts in this industry.

Rising gas prices......people can't afford to travel....look for this stock to decline over the summer.
