Scary part is this could very well outperform given our unfortunate dependence on these ratings agencies. Still, long term money will fare better elsewhere, too much "black box" and not enough transparency in this biz. Plus. I just gave it the red thumb of death on Investor Beat today, so I'm sticking with my guns.

Moody’s Corp. (NYSE: MCO) was interesting to see here because of the ratings agencies under so much pressure. The need for new European ratings was the catalyst here. Shares just hit a new 52-week high as well of $49.94 and the prior 52-week range was $32.27 to $49.50 and the market cap is about $11 billion. This one trades above the consensus price target of $48.00 and the yield is only about 1.3%.

Completely useless business that will be of no value to anyone in the future.

almost monopoly status in the corporate rating business

MCO has an illiquid balance sheet, with even a negative stockholders' equity. It also has a too high valuation compared to its sales potential. Its stock price may fall back to less than $23 as in 2010-09, providing a 30% return.

Moody's is a free cash flow machine with significant barriers to entry and limited competition. PE and FCF multiple should expand 3-5 pts as fundamentals show strength and Whitney competitive fears and regulatory risk wind down. Worth $50+

Has good fundamentals, will outperform the market in the long term.

This professional services business provides the necessary insight to evaluate the true value of a business. The more the environment changes, the more this service will be needed. No merger or major transaction can take place without this due diligence. MCO is a steady provider with proven record and steady profits. It practices what it preaches, and it is solid financially as well as adaptable. It is also diversified internationally. It is another financial industry that will skyrocket this coming year.
Recs
Moody's has to come under some strict regulation & positive honesty before it will be a viable trading stock.
Recs
Moody's reputation will not recover. Will be squeezed from new entrants.

Credit and credit ratings are more important than ever in uncertain economic environments. Of course, most companies don't like the fact that they have largely been getting downgraded lately.
The first ever US insured municipal bond (Las Vegas monorail) defaulted very recently according to Bloomberg. That is bad for those that issue bond insurance, and goes to show that accurate credit ratings are all the more important.

Fallout from the banking, investment, and ratings industry will keep stock prices down as government looks for people to blame and to penalize.

These guys may be the best-run outfit in their field, and legal action may not stick against them, but it's hard not to think they were acting shadily during the bubble. If you knew such a business owner personally, would you invest in him/her? I just don't think it's a worthwhile place to put money, and I think it's a little unwise for TMF to recommend it.
