If Berkshire Hathaway is to gold, Markel is silver.
Both are very profitable businesses. However, Markel will give you a bigger bang for your buck as it has more room to grow. It is easier to double a $4 billion company to $8 billion than it is to grow a $200 billion company to $400 billion.

The insurance industry is being bombarded with bad press (driving prices down) - with their wisdespread portfolio, they will come back and increase. If you look at their decline to that of other insurers, they are looking pretty good!

Looks like a great consistent company, they seem to be moving in line with the S&P yet keeping marginal gains over S&P for the most part.
