Major player in tobacco.. has smokeless, e-cig and wine components too. The hidden gem is they own 29% of SABMiller which returns $500M in dividend to MO. They have a history of spinning off "holdings" like SABMiller.. the asset is on the books for cost ($9B??) and is worth 3X more..($22B). A hidden bonus!

Should expand well into the e-cig market with a lot of room for growth.

Consistently beats the S&P500 and pays a dividend to boot.
I was able to quit smoking but many people don't.
As long as nicotine is legal there will be a market good times or bad.

Altria is a great stock because as a subsidiary of PM it is close to the heart of the tobacco industry. Even with the decline of big tobacco, the new ecig that Altria is developing seems to be getting rave reviews. Add on a 5.6% dividend yield that's been consistently increasing and how do you lose???

This declining market tobacco company has a premium dividend yield, an outstanding Return on Shareholders equity, and a long record of annual dividend increases in the 7% to 12% range.

While traditional tobacco sales can be expected to continue their long, slow decline, the company moves into acquisitions in the smokeless tobacco nicotine delivery market.

MO continues to be a BUY for careful, conservative, total return oriented investors.

My feeling is that as tobacco smokers contnue to decline in USA, another business is about to have opportunity is medical marijuana
& if it is legallized in USA then they will be one of big companies to benefit from growing & manufacturing it plus pays a nice dividend.

Altria Group is a corporation that is operating as a model of what economists call a cartel. The Government makes more money on the sale of a pack of cigarettes than the tobacco company does and they both make a lot of money in this business. Any threat by competitors to sell a similar product at a cheaper price than the existing big four tobacco companies can sell their product for do to the massive liabilities saddling them due to the Tobacco settlement shake down by the government will see the government move to cease such activities to protect their investment. States have not passed minimum allowable price per pack of cigarettes sold to protect the consumer from saving thousands on the purchases of their tobacco products, the very concept of this is absurd. States passed these laws to put any potential competitive threat to the big four tobacco companies out of business and they succeeded in their efforts and they did so for the sake of the obscene amounts of revenue raised by sin taxes and long term IOUs payable to them from the big four over 20 years time which would be hard to collect if competition built a better mousetrap, or a cheaper one and put the big four out of business. So a business that has a 40% market share of a lucrative business and a willing accomplice in the government to create impassable barriers of entry to block all new competition equals a handsome dividend income with little real downside risk over the long term and a small but real potential for moderate capital growth with certain dividend payouts increasing at a steady clip over the same period seems to me to be a sound place to invest your money in for the long term minded strategy.
