Oil demand increases over time. Each summer oil and gas prices jump and so does the stock.

Marathon Oil is a global player in the energy sector with presence in up-stream, mid-stream, and down-stream segments. The company’s major focus is in the downstream segment, with refineries located in the U.S., making it one of the well-known players in the segment.

The company is slowly moving out of the U.S. market and focusing in the international arena by acquiring more assets. The company’s acquisition of an interest in Ashland has led to a strong presence in Libya. However, the company’s move in diversifying its asset base has exposed it to the geo-political risks embedded with working in the country. Marathon, over a period, has not been successful enough to replace its depleting reserves through new findings. However, it has strived hard in this process, but it could only replace the reserves with undeveloped and probable reserves. In addition, the annual production has fallen in the recent years. This exposes the company to higher risk associated with buying crude oil and refining, which otherwise would have been mitigated by its reserves to a certain extent.

On the other hand, the company is also working on better projects like developing liquefied natural gas in Equatorial Guinea in West Africa, a natural gas into synthetic diesel conversion project in Qatar, to name a few. This will help the company to generate pleasant returns in the future. However, the stock has discounted all the positive news and is trading currently at high levels. It is believed that the negatives will affect the stock fiercely and will further drive the stock to a southward journey.

Like their P/E Ratio (6.41), and industry #2 on EPS growth, among other strengths in a rebounding industry. Unfortunately, at 95.09/S, I can only play with CAPS money, not the real stuff.

To put it as simple as possible, I think Marathon Oil is under valued, and is situated well for the near to mid term future.

Perceived oil shortages and instability in the Arab world along with increased nuclear warhead possibilities in that region will create uncertainty which will give the edge to MRO, a mostly domestic oil producer and refiner and retailer.

I wanted to have an energy stock to hold for the long term, and I settled on Marathon Oil. It was quite a roller-coaster ride, and now I'm back below where I started. But I consider this a buying opportunity. MRO doesn't need $100 oil (or even $60 oil) to be a very profitable company. That's why I bought them in the first place and why I think they will outperform the broad market over any foreseeable long term. (I own shares of MRO in my portfolio.)

Marathon is a conservative company with a big stake in domestic oil and gas production and not too much risky overseas drilling.

Is now (09/2006) off its highs by 20% with decline in oil prices. Good time for a short term gain, as oil will not stay down, and great long-term prospects for this company. Recent stock buy-back only increased value of an already good holding.
