Mueller Water Products, Inc. (MWA-B)

CAPS Rating:
*****

A North American manufacturer of water infrastructure and flow control products for use in water distribution networks, water and wastewater treatment facilities, gas distribution systems and fire protection piping systems.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

When you cannot: wash your car, water the lawn, have long hot showers, fill your pool or hot tub,
etc., you got to stop and wonder. Where will the flowers come from? Who will grow the food you need (not want) and where is the beer gonna come from and at what price? Ya can ride a bike, walk and...More

The success of this stock depends upon the ability of municipalities to appropriately allocate limited tax funds to something that is long-term and boring. Not likely.

Been watching this one for a while. Long-term outperform. Hold for at least 6 months.

Water play. Water is a valuable resource and will only become more valuable (unless populations start declining). Has business in both water distribtution and wastewater handling. I also like the fire protection piping aspect, adds a bit more diversification. Speculative for this stock (have not done much DD) but I like the industry a lot.

Hi Everyone,
I am curious about the Price to Earnings ratio for this company. I do not understand how to account for the difference in PE reported on the CAPS pages for MWA-B verses MWA. The B shares are reported as having a PE of about 16 and the A shares as having a PE of about 56. Can anyone explain this to me. One of my disciplines in my own investing is questioning whether to own a stock when its PE gets to 45, and picking a sell point when it gets much above 50. Assuming that the only earnings we can count on are the current ones, it makes no sense to have to own a stock for 45 or more years before it earns what you paid for it. I prefer present values in what I buy and tend to look for better values in cases with ridiculously high PEs. But is this the current case with MWA-B or with MWA? Please help. Thanks,
Austinhippie
