I warn people before they invest in this company to really do their homework. Find out who your investing in and do not just look at numbers. Speak to it's employees. They will tell you more than any stock ticker ever could.

Navigant Consulting (NCI) is one of my favorites, mostly just b/c so many people claim to know so much about it and really don't (especially investors/analysts). As a result, NCI is often way undervalued and, more than I know anything, it will ultimately pay me in the long run. How? Well, it's a beautiful thing really. They have proven that they can do solid business when the economy is booming and that they will do even better when the economy sours. This has a lot to do with the nature of their business, apparently, as they "consult" their clients (which can be companies, countries, law firms, executives, government agencies, etc.) when things are uncertain and they are going through regulatory changes, legal pressure, or any other type of dispute/investigation.

Something I learned recently (that makes complete sense) is the number of lawsuits, arbitrations, criminal charges, and/or other disputes grows inversely with the economy. Additionally, often when the economy is going poorly, the gov't tends to enact new regulatory measures to try to mitigate the damage caused by the contraction/recession/depression. When this happens (a prime example is Sarb. Oxley a few years back), companies (and often their attorneys) turn to NCI for help. The perks during economic downturns are all in addition to the constant inflow of business that they already enjoy from litigations (attorneys paying them to get NCI's forensic accountants to help them figure out their defense or prosecution in any type criminal/civil matter) and other niches in which NCI operates successfully (don't know as much about these, but "Healthcare" and "Capital Advising" comes up a lot in their financials as solid performers).

Where am I going with this? Well, the bottom line is that I often read blogs and other message boards in which people speak of Navigant and its industry so generally that I can't help but laugh. They say things like, "when a country is going through a recession, the first thing companies scrap are consulting fees" and I can't help but ask "WHAT KIND OF CONSULTING ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?" Consulting is a field that has grown to be so diverse that labeling it so generally is almost like labeling Biomolecular Engineers the same as Civil Engineers under the blanket "Engineer" title. When you break down the different types of consulting, you will find that there are a few sub-fields and the related companies that thrive in an economically unstable environment and NCI is one of them.

Based on the reasons above, many other companies in the industry are solid, too, but what makes NCI stand out in my mind is that they are willing to adjust when they realize that something isn't working properly. Many of these types of consulting companies try to grow unsustainably and delve into fields in which they have no business competing. All this does is swell the stock price in the short-term only to have the company's bottom fall out over the long term when they realize that their bottom lines are being corroded directly by these half-hearted endeavors and indirectly by the cost of not focusing in on the specialties on which the company originally thrived.

Just as an example of the willingness of NCI's management to make changes, within 6-months of realizing that margin was being sucked out from below the line, the company consolidated a substantial portion of its real estate and said goodbye to many other under performing sub-practices and their managers. Lo and behold, Navigant ended up posting record figures in Q1 and Q2 of this year...

Obviously, I feel passionate about this company (probably too much so- ha), but I think the enthusiasm is more just b/c I feel like this is one thing that I feel far ahead of the curve on :-) Navigant is solid, solid, solid, and, while it's still working out some kinks, it will do great things over the long haul.

we're a litigious society and that will never end. This is like betting on a football game - betting that 1.there will be a score and 2.that 2 teams will be involved. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy.

Morningstar recommendation. Looks healthy with a good P/E, located in a field with a lot of demand.

The stock is being repurchased at a tune of 250 mil. That in itself will bring the stock price up but more to the story. This company is one of only a few that does what it does. They may in fact be the best at it too. With a FPE at 17.5 Its Another good trade.
