NS's intermodal-doublestack growth potential will, if properly executed, fuel the top line growth sufficiently to overcome any near-term loss of coal revenues. The Crescent Route from New Orleans/Memphis to the northeast has shorter mileage than competitive highway carrier interstate routes. This will become centerpiece of the integrated intermodal marketing strategy. It is likely that the cost of over-the-road trucking such as wages, hours of service and fuel will increasingly divert growing truckload volumes to rail and thus, to NS in its intermodal corridors.

Dividends500 tracks the 200 strongest dividends in the S&P 500. To qualify as a strong dividend, the company must meet two simple requirements:

- A payout ratio below 50%
- An increasing dividend from the prior year

Because there are more than 200 dividend paying companies in the S&P 500 that meet these requirements, the qualifying companies with the largest dividend yields were chosen.

Dividends500 intends to test this FactSet article, which highlights these strong dividend paying companies and their outperformance versus the S&P 500 as a whole (Page 12).

I think the market overreacted to the earnings miss (-.03/sh) - which shouldn't have been a major surprise considering ongoing weakness in coal shipments.

Overlooked - or discounted - is their 4% dividend increase and solid overall earnings.

Continuing to add on pullbacks.

Weakest of the major railroads, but the fundamentals are still sound, they serve major markets, and are trying to reduce dependency on coal. Valuation play.

“When Warren lectures at business schools, he says, “I could improve your ultimate financial welfare by giving you a ticket with only 20 slots in it so you had twenty punches – representing all the investments that you get to make in a lifetime. And once you’ve punched through the card, you couldn’t make any more investments at all. Under those rules, you’d really think carefully about what you did, and you’d be forced to load up on what you’d really thought about. So you’d do much better.”" – Charlie Munger

In the spirit of this idea, I made 5 initial punches/picks, and will thereafter make a maximum of 1 pick per fiscal quarter until all 20 punches have been used. I expect to use up all punches over the next 5-7 years. I will compare the performance of this acct to my more "active" CAPs account, and see if this maxim proves correct.
