The New York Times Company (NYT)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company is a diversified media company that currently includes newspapers, internet businesses, television and radio stations, investments in paper mills and other investments.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

A declining industry, falling circulation rates and lower advertising revenues. Although the company has a strong brand, that brand has been tarnished by NYT demonstrating that it is not objective and can hardly be considered patriotic. The fact that NYT devulged the Swift program that the administration used to follow the international path(s) of money to terrorist organizations and other classified programs designed to protect US citizens may have hastened their declining circulation numbers. Harbinger Capital and Firebrand Partners have been able to put candidates in two board seats which may help the company over the long term.

Print media is history. Granted, NYT has other assets, but they're still basically a newspaper company. Ad sales, circulation and, most of all, relevance has been sinking steadily for years. I should probably just stay away from this name, but in the near-term a red thumb should make me some CAPS points.
