Manifests associated with these merchant ships sank by German Torpedoes during WWII supposedly contain a substantial surplus of silver. Recovery of the two ships is to begin in the spring of 2012!

OMEX could go lower, but the upside is "ginormous", as my young son would say, and that means really, really big. First, it will probably get the lion's share of the loot - half a billion dollars in silver, gold and treasure, from the "Black Swan", leaving Spain holding the bag. Then it has a couple hundred million in silver located in the English Channel ready for recovery. But that's not all! They have other deals with the Brits to salvage other valuable finds, and finally, they have a gold mine underwater in the South Pacific. This last is more iffy, but who cares? Just one of these works out to a pop. I own in real life, and so far, so good! OK, I bought it at $1.60, but I still like it. Spain's case is caught on the shoals.

A lot of irons in the fire, and if they win the lawsuit against Spain, the stock will pop again.

I have been following (and buying) OMEX for many years. Trading around a buck a share, it's like buying a lottery ticket and in many ways, it's a similar gamble. From an investor perspective, it is very risky and fundamentally, not an attractive stock. However, it remains one of my favorite companies to talk about and offers "speculative investors" an opportuntity to invest in hidden treasure - literally. For you Fools that like a good story, read on.
I believe that in time, the "Black Swan" (Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes) case will settle and Odyssey will most likely receive fair compensation for "salvage and recovery services". For those of you new to the topic, the Mercedes was a Spanish frigate sunk by British warships on October 5, 1804 off the coast of Portugal. Odyssey found her in 2007 and recovered approximately 500,000 gold and silver coins (over 17 tons of treasure). Odyssey chartered a jumbo jet and flew the treasure to an undisclosed location in the US under the dark of night. Spain is trying to claim the treasure under sovereign immunity and Odyssey argues that immunity does not apply when a sovereign vessel is being used for commercial transport. Other parties have stepped in and made claim to the treasure as well and the legal fight continues. Odyssey STILL maintains physical possession of the booty and this is far from over.
But Black Swan is only one of many reasons I like Odyssey. I am curious to see what opportunties may come from an announcement last year that they are moving into exploration and monetization of gold, copper and silver--rich Seafloor Massive Sulfide (SMS) deposits through a new partnership that owns mineral exploration rights on approximately 150,000 square kilometers of ocean floor in the South Pacific.
Some more recent finds, salvage contracts, cooperative governments (really!) and more make this one to keep your eyes on.
One final note, Odyssey is a recognized expert at precision deep sea operations. BP should call Odyssey to assist with the disatrous leaking oil well in the gulf. My thoughts go out to all of you that have been or will be affected.

The 'Black Swan" treasure was never part of OMEX' balance sheet.

They may very well end up with it, despite a magistrate's reccomendation.

Losing the Spanish treasure hurt but they have reasonable grounds for appeal. A reasonable gamble at this point.

Doing the math on the ship wrecks they already, have it doesn't seem like existing finds are paying the current bills. This stock a lotery ticket which most of the time doesn't pay off.
