I'm generally speaking a bit bearing on the market given its recent run ups. However, with the next downturn, however large it may be, I do not anticipate Office Max making as drastic of a recover.
I've been looking at Office Max's weekly ads and it's a bit concerning how they're borrowing from the future. Take for example their printer deals, they're offering cashback in the next quarter for a printer purchased in this quarter (a large cashback at that). It may sound like a great way to entice customer, but at what cost?
It'll be interesting to see how OMX does. I for one believe that ODP and SPLS will be better positioned down the road.

OfficeMax has a very solid balance sheet and their cash from operations numbers still look very solid.
Once the economy improves they will be a leaner enterprise with the ability to drives profits more easily than other office products retailers.

Cyclical action in an uncertain market in an adverse environment.

There isn't enough room in this sector for three huge companies, and from my experience with all of them, I think Staples is going to win. It's going to be a long and slow decline, peppered with short-term inversions, but ultimately Office Max and Office Depot are going to zero and Staples will stand alone.

It's not a best buy. Nor is it a Best Buy!

Cust service has dwindled, and OMAX has let go most of their talent in the field. #3 player in 3 player market...

stock is very under priced. New strategies along with international growth with Lyreco and domestic partnership with Safeway stores will show dramatic growth and profits over the next 5 years. odp will inevetibly go out of business before end of 2009 giving more market share to omx.

Have you been in one of these places lately? Dull, less-than-helpful employees, no one around when you need them... This may sound weird -- it feels like a fake storefront set up for a movie, or an FBI sting. I personally know 2 employees, and they're both looking to work elsewhere.

OfficeMax is severely underpriced just look at the p/e ratio of it and its competitors. Staples is priced around 16 p/e ratio while OfficeMax is around 7 p/e ratio. I was looking at the balance sheet and running some simple liquidity ratios and everything seems to check out fine. The only difference is that OfficeMax is smaller compared to Staples. You could also compare OfficeMax with Office Depot. When I was first looking at office max it was around 19 dollars per share now people are buying it up to 20.79 and it will only go up because it is so under-priced. If you want a safe bet during these risky times, I have to say this is my very top pick but I'm just a finance student at University of Washington so I'm too broke to put any money at where I think is making money.

I shop there, let's see if I can get some of my $$$ back.

Every since the market wanted OMX to hit .93 and missed, it has been going to down every since. It has lowered more than enough and I personally take advantage. They put up good numbers and you need to look into OMX.

Office Max knows how to go to market. They are gaining strength through agressive bidding strategies. I do have reservtions about staying in too long, The stock will rise 12-24 mth. Success will be determined if customers re-up on contracts.
Recs
Keep in mind that OfficeMax and the government have contracts in place... The government isn't going away and the need for supplies will always be there. Also low PE ratio and great time to buy in.

I hope the Bates valuation model works. My target for OMX is 44

continued pressure on consumer spending will weigh on this stock over the next year.

Mismanaged company but many layoffs coming. Have a strong call center in oklahoma city and omax will close the stores in bad areas to creat value.
